Aesthetics:

The Rival 300 is Steelseries’ only right-handed mouse, with a jutted out bit on the right of the mouse for your palm, which I quite like but could be uncomfortable for some. You have your standard two mouse buttons and a scroll wheel on top, with an extra button for changing CPI profiles, which you can set up with the Steelseries Engine software. The matte finish on top can collect sweat and fingerprints quite easily, so you may have to clean it every once in a while. Next to your thumb you have a raised bumpy surface, which has changed from the initial run of the Rival, and is more comfortable as well. There is also two extra buttons which are easy to reach and use, especially in gaming but also for general computing tasks. All the buttons are completely programmable with the software. Last but not least, at the back of the mouse you have a lit up Steelseries logo and a small panel that says ‘Rival’. This is removable and you can make your own with the use of a 3D printer. Overall build quality is great, it’s weighty enough to feel like you have control over it and light enough so you can move it easily. Being an optical mouse, you must use a mousepad otherwise it will not track properly.

Functionality:

When I’m gaming, I want to be comfortable with the gear I’m using and know that it will work when I want it to with no hitches. The Rival 300 ticks all those boxes, with rather large ticks too. There is no acceleration (unless you want it inside the Engine software) so each movement over the same distance regardless of speed will get you to the same spot every time. The CPI can go from as low as 50 to so high that a slight movement will have you halfway across 3 horizontal monitors (slight exaggeration there, but you get the idea). Each button just works, every time you need it, which is really reassuring. All in all it’s a great mouse.

Overall Opinion:

I have been using the DotA 2 version of the original Rival for over a year now, and I have never had any problems with it, and it has worn well. This mouse is perfect for anyone who needs two extra buttons for anything, but MOBAs and FPS games come to mind in particular. Another quality product from Steelseries which I am happy to recommend to anyone and everyone.
