If you have read any of my other reviews, you’ll know that one thing I value above all in video games is that they have their own personality, that they have something that sets them apart from their compatriots in the genre. Million to One Hero certainly has its own personality that’s for sure. Let’s see how it stacks up.
Million to One Hero is a community-driven platformer developed and published in house by Over The Top Games, a Madrid based developer who are also responsible for NyxQuest and Full Mojo Rampage. The title was released on the 27th of February 2019 on Steam.
The story of the game is that Chronos, the Greek god of time has sought you out in the year 2019 to regale you with tales of old like a grandparent with celestial power. He tells the tale of Epicus, one of the forgotten greek legends who embarked on many a fine adventure facilitated by yours truly, but who had a habit of dying in horrifically painful ways like a mash between man and lemming so Chronos had to award him a kind of temporal immortality as long as he continued to collect glowing golden orbs for him like Pac Man learned to delegate. Overall, a very simple story, but that’s all it needs to be.
Presentation in this game is very clearly one of the stand-out aspects. the small scale pixel art with its bright colours and background details are genuinely gorgeous, often they will have small details like giants consuming ruins or strange shapes firing lasers like a geometry worksheet has returned for revenge. The music is also a valuable piece of this puzzle, even with the chiptune instruments it still manages to feel grandiose and thrilling like Jason and the Argonauts through an Atari Jaguar. In fact, the presentation is what gives Million to One Hero its personality, the thing I hold in such high regard. Its backgrounds and music make it feel as if the user-generated levels are still a part of this grand sweeping adventure through a dangerous mythical Greece in the time of gods and beasts while the texture work and the colour palette and usage makes it all pop. In short, I love the way this game handles its world and what you see and feel of it.
Gameplay in Million to One Hero revolves deeply around its movement, natural of its platforming disposition. This game has your natural jump wall hop and climbing ability, but where it is different is in the ability to air dash to cover more distance, and not only that but it is such an integral part of the platforming as it allows for eight way movement, dashing up, down, left, and right but also all four diagonals as well. This, in combination with certain items that can allow you to glide, or the bow and arrow shots you have to make in the air, can create a challenge harder than a stale baguette in plate armour. Standard sword combat is as simple as can be expected, one button slashing attack combined with the shield or your aforementioned dash as a defense. Movement is varied and interesting in the challenges it can present but the sword combat is less involved than I would like. All in all, it gave me a positive impression.
In closing words, I would recommend this game. With its gameplay and its endless visual charm, I would say it’s worth the asking price, combined with the literally endless content, and its in-depth level creator with a simple UI and easy to understand tools, I would say that Million to Oe Hero is well worth your time and money.
